There are upto 900 million people who speak English either as a first language (e.g. the majority of people from United States, Britain, Canada, Australia) or as an additional language (e.g. India, Nigeria, Germany). English is the most commonly spoken language in the world. Because English is so widely spoken it is regarded as a global language. It is used by International treaty, the official language aerial and maritime communications, as well as one of the official languages of the European Union and the United Nations. The language originated predominately from a mixture of Latin and Germanic roots and many meanings can be expressed with the Romance root and Germanic root. For example, the German for wife is 'Weib' and the Spanish for spouse is 'esposa'.
